Support the EcoStudents' New Outdoor Learning Environment

Over the summer, Sustainable Nevada helped High Desert Montessori purchase a piece of land between two of the school's buildings for a new outdoor learning environment.

Outdoor learning environments are living laboratories that teach permaculture principles through place-based and project-based learning. As such they are an important part of the EcoStudents program.

The first step in the development of this new learning environment is the creation of a master plan. Recently, Verdant Connections worked with High Desert Montessori students, teachers, administrators, parents and community members to create an outdoor learning environment master plan. The plan includes gardens, food forests, green classrooms, a pollinator meadow, animal husbandry areas, hoop houses and row crops.

HDMS will use food grown on the lot in the school's organic lunch program. The EcoStudents will use the food to create a community supported agriculture program, providing the local at-risk community with fresh, organic, locally grown food.

The master plan will be utilized to guide the development of a special use permit the school will submit to the City of Reno. Once approved, Sustainable Nevada and High Desert Montessori will begin a fund raising campaign to secure the funds to build the new outdoor learning environment.
